Lithophane in 3D Printing
We have brought the traditional printing technique of lithophanie into the 21st century: originally very elaborately made of porcelain, we can now easily use the method in 3D printing. A relief in translucent material transforms a photo into a three-dimensional image – a lithophanie or lithophane.
The heart of this extraordinary technique are the height differences that create light and shadow through varying material thicknesses. In its "raw" state, you only recognize reliefs and outlines, but as soon as light shines through the Lithophane Photo Lamp, the differences in brightness create a vibrant image.
